Urban Plantations is coming to Orange County!
In 2016, we’ll be available for design, installation and maintenance of fruit and vegetable gardens in Orange County. Please pass on the word to your northerly friends.
December finds us picking a plethora of vitamin-packed greens! Recent harvests include kale, lettuce, bok choi, arugula, spinach, mustard greens and chard. Our broccolis, peas and brussels sprouts are growing like mad.
Dark leafy greens give us important minerals, vitamins C and K and calcium. Some contain carotenoids, fiber and folate that each stop cancerous growth (source). It’s suggested adults should get 2 cups of dark leafy greens per week.
This year’s winter solstice will occur in San Diego on December 21, 2015 at 8:49 PM. What’s the solstice, you ask? This solar holiday is celebrated in many cultures but in scientific terms, it’s “the moment that the sun reaches its southernmost position over our planet and begins its journey northward”.
The first day of winter is the shortest day of the year. In San Diego, this day is “4 hours, 19 minutes shorter” than on June 21st, the summer solstice. The solstice is important to gardeners and farmers because of their close relationship with the sun. Urban Plantations celebrates with an employee party!
BORERS IN TREES
In the last few years, many trees have been attacked by bark boring insects, mostly Shothole Borers.
Borers target trees that are experiencing stress, such as poor pruning techniques, inadequate nutrition, and drought conditions.
Trees can normally protect themselves from a small infestation of tree borers by exuding sap into the hole that the borer creates. During a drought, trees produce less sap and the borers can multiply unchecked.
Treatment depends on the particular insect. After diagnosis, use resources like UC Davis for any available chemical treatments.
Removal of infested trees and branches, and adequate irritation are the best methods to reducing this devastating orchard pest.
Right at this very moment, about 40% of the U.S. food supply isn’t being eaten.
Sound ridiculous? According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, Americans are not only wasting “the equivalent of $162 billion each year, but also about 25 percent of U.S. water supply and producing 33 million cars’ worth of greenhouse gases, all for food that never gets eaten.”
